Wedding Photography at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church

A sanctuary built around a wall of organ pipes.

Lake Grove Presbyterian Church sits on Sunset Drive in Lake Oswego, a few minutes off I-5 south of Portland. Its sanctuary is dominated by a full-height pipe organ that fills the entire front wall — it is the reason most people remember the room. I photographed a wedding here in 2009, and the pictures below are from that day.

What it is like to photograph here

Everything below is drawn from photographing a wedding here in 2009.

The organ is the room, and it is taller than you think
The pipe organ occupies the whole front wall behind the chancel, floor to ceiling. It makes an extraordinary backdrop, but it is tall enough that a normal lens crops it awkwardly — getting the couple and the full instrument in one frame means going wide and stepping well back down the aisle. Worth knowing if you want that photograph, because there is only one place in the room it works from.
There is a second wall worth using
Off to one side the maple panelling is set with tall, narrow panes of coloured glass. It throws warm colour and gives a completely different backdrop from the organ, in the same room. Two distinct looks without moving the wedding.
It is warm and it is not bright
The sanctuary is lit tungsten-warm and fairly dim, with daylight only trickling in high up. It photographs beautifully but it is not a bright room — in 2009 that was genuinely difficult, and it is the main reason the ceremony frames here look the way they do. On current equipment it is a non-issue.
The reception space is a different building entirely
The fellowship hall is a large room with a parquet floor, brick walls and a high timber ceiling, with a stage at one end. It is practical rather than pretty, and it is bright and roomy enough for a full sit-down reception and dancing without anyone moving cars.
There is a courtyard
A small planted courtyard with a lattice screen sits off the main building — useful for details and for getting people outside into daylight between the ceremony and the reception.

Practical details

Address, phone and congregation details checked against the church’s own site on 31 August 2026. The photographs are from 2009, so confirm anything about the building with the church before planning around it.

Where it is
4040 Sunset Drive, Lake Oswego, Oregon. A few minutes from I-5, with on-site parking. The church office is 503-636-5656.
It is an active congregation, not a venue business
Lake Grove has been on this site for more than eighty years and runs a congregation of several hundred, with Sunday services at 8.00, 9.30 and 11.00. There is no published wedding brochure or price list, so availability and whether they marry non-members are questions for the church office rather than something to assume.
The organ is a working instrument
It is a named part of the church's music ministry, not decoration, and the building hosts the Lake Grove Concert Series. If you want it played at your ceremony, ask early — that is a musician booking, not a room booking.
